The Village of Baxter Estates, with a population of approximately
1,000 people, is a beautiful suburban enclave situated on
Manhasset Bay in the town of Port Washington on the north
shore of Long Island. Baxter Estates is a peaceful oasis with
a friendly atmosphere, yet is conveniently located only a
40-minute commuter train ride from the heart of Manhattan.
Our Village encompasses a residential area and a commercial
section along the north side of Port Washington’s Main
Street (see Map).
With its easy access to Long Island’s outstanding public
facilities – parks, beaches, boating, fishing and other
recreational facilities - and its proximity to the Metropolitan
area’s world-renowned cultural and civic attractions,
Baxter Estates captures suburban living at its very best.
An elected Mayor and Board of Trustees, as well as appointed
bodies - Board of Zoning Appeals, Tree Committee and Landmarks
Preservation Commission – and an appointed Building
Inspector oversee the operation of our village and work to
preserve and foster its parkland appearance and its peaceful
and friendly atmosphere.
Running through the heart of our Village is the 5.4-acre
Barbara Johnson Park and Preserve at Baxter’s Pond,
a watershed area which is owned and maintained by Nassau County.
Our Village was instrumental in the formation two years ago
of Baxter’s Pond Foundation, a not-for-profit entity
which raises private donations to carry out maintenance and
beautification activities at the Park and Preserve in coordination
with County officials. The Foundation has carried out several
successful beautification projects at the Pond and Preserve
and is working with County officials on additional programs.
Our Village is part of the Port Washington School District,
which is noted for its academic excellence, artistic and musical
endeavors and athletic achievements. Schreiber High School
students have consistently and significantly scored above
the state and national average.
